This date of year, it’s easy to get caught up in the frantic holiday hubbub–finding the right gifts, waiting in distant lines, wrapping until the wee hours. And, half the date, the gifts aren’t even quite right for the receivers. Let’s face it: holidays can be stressful, particularly when gift giving is involved. How can we help each other out of that cycle?

You might consider that the next date your friends or loved ones ask you whether there is a specific gift you would like to receive: propose they donate to one of your favorite charities in your name. I have a couple of good friends who do that every year.

Although the New Orleans French Quarter is open for business, much of that region is still digging out from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. It isn’t in the headlines much

anymore, but untold numbers will not have a home in which to celebrate these holidays. Habitat for Humanity, one of my favorite charities, is making a significant difference by helping build homes with volunteers. That organization–or any other charity that is addressing the needs of those who are less lucky than we–might be a great starting point.

You say you prefer the concept of getting and giving something more personal for your loved ones and friends? I totally get it. I’m the same way–a traditionalist at heart. But possibly we can do both, and experience the joys of giving both personally and profoundly.
